God made the children of Israel separate from other people--Israel was holy because God is holy (Leviticus 19:2; 20:24). Through Moses, God said to Israel, "Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God. And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the Lord which sanctify you" (Leviticus 20:1,2,7,8). The children of Israel were not to follow the ways of Egypt nor the ways of Canaan, but they were to walk in God's ways because He is their God (Leviticus 18:4). By walking with God, Israel would safely live in the land (Leviticus 25:18).
